Parks and Park Connectors in Singapore

Image
Singapore's Parks and Park Connectors: In the highly urbanised city of Singapore, parks and park connectors play a vital role in enhancing liveability by providing green spaces for recreation and biodiversity. The National Parks Board (NParks), established in 1990, has been instrumental in this transformation. Its origins trace back to the 1960s when then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew launched the Garden City vision, initiating Singapore’s first tree-planting campaign. Today, NParks leads the "City in Nature" vision, expanding green spaces, restoring ecosystems, and planting one million trees by 2030 to create a sustainable and vibrant environment for current and future generations of Singaporeans. Visualised parks in Singapore and did a quick and rough calculation of parks in Singapore based on Urban Redevelopment Authority's Master Plan 2019 Land Use Plan data. :)

Wealth & Well-being in Southeast Asia

Image
Wealth & Well-being in Southeast Asia The relationship between a country's wealth and the health of its people is complex. In Southeast Asia, nations with higher incomes, like Singapore (US$84,734) and Brunei (US$32,963), tend to have longer life expectancies (84 and 77 years, respectively). On the other hand, countries with lower incomes, such as Myanmar (US$1,233) and Timor-Leste (US$1,503), often see shorter lifespans (68 years). However, some countries, like Vietnam (74 years) and Thailand (75 years), show that good health is not only about wealth—factors such as healthcare, lifestyle, and government policies also play an important role in people’s well-being.

Annual Movements of Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli)

Image
Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) is a small, elusive bird native to northeastern North America, found in high-altitude spruce forests. It migrates from its breeding grounds in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada to wintering habitats in the Caribbean, particularly Hispaniola, between late September and early November. The bird returns to breed from May to early June. This bird is known for its distinct song and is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss. Drawing inspiration from John Nelson's blue whale migration map, I created a time-series migration map for this vulnerable species.

Hougang Planning Area

Image
Historically a farming settlement in the 1800s, Hougang was characterised by plantations and a simple rural lifestyle. The area underwent significant change in the 20th century, becoming part of Singapore's urban expansion. Today, its HDB estates and modern infrastructure stand in contrast to its agricultural origins, reflecting the broader narrative of Singapore's development from rural beginnings to a modern city-state. Saw a couple of city map posters and decided to make a similar one. :]
