Europe's Carbon Emissions

Image
Europe's Carbon Emissions With climate change accelerating, reducing carbon emissions is more urgent than ever. Europe, home to both industrial giants and small nations, plays a key role in this global effort. Countries like Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom lead in emissions, driven by large populations and industrial activity. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has also disrupted energy security, increasing reliance on coal and fossil fuels as countries shift away from Russian gas. To meet the EU’s target of cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2030, strong climate policies and global cooperation remain vital.  Experimented with the use of fishnets/graticules as a map background layer :)

Parks and Park Connectors in Singapore

Image
Singapore's Parks and Park Connectors: In the highly urbanised city of Singapore, parks and park connectors play a vital role in enhancing liveability by providing green spaces for recreation and biodiversity. The National Parks Board (NParks), established in 1990, has been instrumental in this transformation. Its origins trace back to the 1960s when then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew launched the Garden City vision, initiating Singapore’s first tree-planting campaign. Today, NParks leads the "City in Nature" vision, expanding green spaces, restoring ecosystems, and planting one million trees by 2030 to create a sustainable and vibrant environment for current and future generations of Singaporeans. Visualised parks in Singapore and did a quick and rough calculation of parks in Singapore based on Urban Redevelopment Authority's Master Plan 2019 Land Use Plan data. :)

Wealth & Well-being in Southeast Asia

Image
Wealth & Well-being in Southeast Asia The relationship between a country's wealth and the health of its people is complex. In Southeast Asia, nations with higher incomes, like Singapore (US$84,734) and Brunei (US$32,963), tend to have longer life expectancies (84 and 77 years, respectively). On the other hand, countries with lower incomes, such as Myanmar (US$1,233) and Timor-Leste (US$1,503), often see shorter lifespans (68 years). However, some countries, like Vietnam (74 years) and Thailand (75 years), show that good health is not only about wealth—factors such as healthcare, lifestyle, and government policies also play an important role in people’s well-being.

Annual Movements of Bicknell’s Thrush (Catharus bicknelli)

Image
Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) is a small, elusive bird native to northeastern North America, found in high-altitude spruce forests. It migrates from its breeding grounds in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada to wintering habitats in the Caribbean, particularly Hispaniola, between late September and early November. The bird returns to breed from May to early June. This bird is known for its distinct song and is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss. Drawing inspiration from John Nelson's blue whale migration map, I created a time-series migration map for this vulnerable species.

Hougang Planning Area

Image
Historically a farming settlement in the 1800s, Hougang was characterised by plantations and a simple rural lifestyle. The area underwent significant change in the 20th century, becoming part of Singapore's urban expansion. Today, its HDB estates and modern infrastructure stand in contrast to its agricultural origins, reflecting the broader narrative of Singapore's development from rural beginnings to a modern city-state. Saw a couple of city map posters and decided to make a similar one. :]

Cambodia's River Network

Image
Home to the Tonlé Sap Lake, Cambodia's river network is a vital water system that supports both the country's ecology and economy. The Tonle Sap River connects the lake to the Mekong River, creating a dynamic flow that shifts direction seasonally. This network includes numerous tributaries, channels, and wetlands, providing essential resources for agriculture, fishing, and transportation, while also serving as a habitat for diverse wildlife. The rivers play a key role in sustaining the livelihoods of millions of Cambodians, shaping the nation's landscape and culture. Inspired by Perrin Remonté's river maps, I tried to recreate a similar map of Cambodia :)

Singapore General Election 2020 Results

Image
The Singapore General Election (GE) of 2020 took place on July 10, 2020. It was held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to changes in the campaign process, such as restrictions on physical rallies and more virtual events. The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, won decisively, securing 83 out of 93 seats in Parliament, though they saw a drop in their share of the popular vote to 61.24% compared to the previous GE in 2015. The opposition parties performed better than in previous elections, with the Workers' Party (WP) securing 10 seats, including a significant victory in the traditionally pro-government stronghold of Aljunied GRC (Group Representation Constituency). This was the first time in Singapore's history that an opposition party held more than one GRC. The election saw the entry of new political parties, and there was a shift in voter sentiment, especially among younger and more urban voters, who were increasingly lo...
